The rest of the day is a blur of expectation and recounting to our closest friends how we started talking. I walk her to her next two classes, taking as many stolen moments as possible. Friends and acquaintances give us small smiles in the hallway, probably because neither of us can stop smiling ourselves. Everyone is excited to be going on Christmas vacation.
After school I give her a ride home. She invites me over to take a walk later. I take her up on it after I finish my chores.
âWhere are you headed?â Mom asks as I head for the garage door.
I stop, a slow smile creeping across my face. âOver to Lucyâs house. I asked her to be my girlfriend today.â
Her eyebrows shoot up with worry. âSo she finally caught you, huh?â
âUm, I guess soâ¦?â I say, not really knowing what she means.
âWell, invite her over for dinner sometime, maybe after Christmas.â
âOkay.â I hesitate in the doorway. âThereâs a party later tonight too. This girl, Myra, is kicking off Christmas vacation.â
Her eyes search mine. I know she wants to give me a lecture about being responsible, but all she says is, âBe good.â
I run out of the house and knock on Lucyâs door. She steps outside wearing a hoodie and jeans. My heart swells at the sight of her.
âHey. You ready?â I ask. She nods and we walk to the end of the block, turn around and walk back. Itâs cold, but not so cold that we donât enjoy each otherâs company. We go around back to her gazebo. Several pine trees block the view from the house and I take advantage of the bit of privacy to say with my mouth all the things my words donât seem to do enough justice.
Before it starts getting too heavy, I pull back, still holding my arms around her.
âI have to get in for dinner,â I say. âMy dad is going to be home. You good to go to that party at nine tonight?â
âYeah.â Her grin is huge and infectious. âIâm so excited. First party as boyfriend and girlfriend.â
âThatâs right. Iâll have to publicly stake my claim so no one has any doubts.â
She rolls her eyes, but smiles. âYou going to pee on me too?â
âWasnât planning on it, but now that you mention itâ¦â
She slugs me in the arm and gives me one last kiss before we part ways for our respective houses.
After dinner, where dad learns that Iâm dating Lucy and proceeds to lecture me about girls and emotions and hearts and dangerous occasions, and I discover I canât wait until dinner is over, I wash the dishes and head up to my room. I have a freelance project that needs to be completed tonight.
Later, after I refresh my cologne, brush and style my hair, and change my clothes, I head out to the car and get it warmed up. Itâs covered in a thin film of ice, just since I pulled in after school. A few snowflakes have started to drop by the time I go up and ring her doorbell.
